I love Babel

I am liguistically challenged. Or more truthfully, I am as lazy as a human being can be when it comes to learning languages. I know my limitations and laziness is up there in the top ten for me I'm afraid. There's a problem though, I love learning about other cultures, their passions, their history, everything! With the wonders of the internet and the knowledge aavailable at our fingertips we can now access a huge amount of information about other cultures that it is astounding. I know I'm stating the obvious here, I am just saying it out loud because of how astounded I am! LOL!

To me though, nothing beats conversing with people directly and I am having a wonderful time at the moment writing messages over the internet to people of all ages and backgrounds from countries all over the world in their own languages using Babel Fish, the translation site on the internet. It may not be perfect, but by keeping my language basic I am able to speak to new friends all over the place.

I am so chuffed by this experience that I just wanted to post a short blog about it, daft as it may seem. Anyway, I'm off to talk to some new found friends in Argentina, Spain, Italy and Belgium now. :)

I'm in the husband's chair

I first started blogging to keep Gina company in online communities, as we have done for each other in 'real' life for over 22 years and on-line for as many years as we've had internet access.

On joining I was encouraged to give novel writing a try and bolstered by the posts on this site and Gina's enthusiastic encouragement I started a comedic memoir of my childhood and got to around page 70 (I think) before I let life and work get in the way. At this point the writing stopped and started to collect digital dust on my laptop's desktop until I filed it somewhere 'safe' on my hard drive. 'Safe' in my world means somewhere that I will probably forget and never find my way back to again.

My 'writing' continues though, but this time in blogs which is pretty wild for me since I never saw the point in blogging before and actively avoided anything related to the activity. After coming here though, I'm a convert and thoroughly enjoy it. Reading people's posts, thoughts, opinions, stories, etc, etc. has been a real eye opener and I am now addicted to the whole process.

So, maybe my book will never go past page 70, maybe it will, I don't know and to be frank, I'm enjoying being in any online community with Gina so I will take the 'husband's chair' (what I call the chair in boutiques where husbands are banished to while their wonderful wives partake in the boutique's ambience and offerings, whatever they may be)and I plan to sit back and take in the wonderful conversation that I find here, hopefully chipping in now and then, and sometimes I'll start a conversation myself.

Someone just nudge me when it's closing time. ;)
